Welcome Future Wildcats!
Preparing for Kindergarten
Here are some things to consider as students come to school:
Without help, can your student...
- use the public/school bathroom facilities (wipe, wash hands, undress and redress)
- put on and take off their own coat
- tie their own shoes
- wash their hands
- snap, button, zip, and buckle
Can your student...
- listen to adults and follow simple instructions
- cooperate with other children
- sit for short periods of time
- follow simple two-step directions
Does your student...
- sit and listen to a story
- hold a book upright and turn the pages
- know their first and last name
- tell and retell familiar stories
- know colors, shapes, and sizes
- count from 0-10
- say the ABCs
- hold scissors and pencils appropriately
- recognize and write their first name
- remember to use capital letter for the first letter in a name
- recognize the letters within their own name
Letter Names and Sounds
Leap Frog: The Letter Factory
Learning the alphabet is the first standard of our kindergarten reading curriculum! The Leap Frog video is a great resource to help your child with interest to learning the ABC's names and sounds. We promise you that if you will watch the video every day and then practice with the flashcards, your child will know most of their ABC's if not all by the time school starts!
Here are the Leap Frog ABC flashcards. Print them off and use them to help practice letter names and sounds. You can post them around your child's room and focus on one card a day.
Other Resources for Letter Names and Sounds

Body Alphabet with Jack Hartman (5 minutes). Have students move with the video.
The Letter Sound Challenge. Just the sounds (6 minutes).
Learning to Recognize Numbers 1-10
*Pro-Tip - Watch the videos as often as needed. Have your child find items around the house that represent that number.
Other Resources for Counting
Counting to 10 Forwards and Backwards
Shape Up! - Learn the names of shapes. Make it fun and have students identify shapes around the house, inside and out.

Tips, Tricks, Reminders, and General Information
Attendance
Please ensure that your student arrives and is picked up on time. If you’re going to be late for pick-up, communicate with either the teacher and/or the office. If your child is going to be absent, call the office so they can be excused. Also, be aware that playground and parking lot supervision starts at 8:45 am, do not drop off your students early. This excludes students arriving and entering for breakfast starting at 8:15.
Check Outs
If you need to check your child out during the school day you may call a few minutes before you arrive; however, you must come into the office and show your picture ID. Students will only be released to approved contacts listed in Skyward.
Emergency Contacts
When you complete your registration, please list emergency contacts other than parents. An emergency contact may pick up a student only when a parent/guardian authorizes that person to do so in writing via email to chelsea.dewitt@jordandistict.org. You will always be asked to show ID when signing out your student.
Health Information
- A vision screening is recommended before school starts. Doctor's can do this as a part of a Kindergarten physical
- Immunizations need to be up to date before school begins per state law. Students will not be allowed to continue to attend school if not adequately immunized or exempted. Exemption information is available through the Health Department. Please be sure to bring in a copy of immunization records before school begins.
- Elementary students are not permitted to carry medication at school (including items such as cough drops or essential oils). Please do not send medicine with students. Certain items are exempt (such as inhalers, EpiPens, diabetes medications) if the proper forms are on-file with the school. All medications are kept in a locked container in the Nurse's Office. Office staff are trained each year on safe storage and administration. Please contact our school nurse via email at shonnel.green@jordandistrict.org with additional questions.
- Please visit our Health and Wellness page for additional information.
Lost and Found
Please label all of your student’s items with their name and phone number. If your student has lost something, please have them check the lost and found currently located near the front office.
School Supplies
All supplies are provided by the classroom teachers. However, all students need a backpack big enough to fit a 3 prong folder and a change of clothes. For the first few months of school, please leave a change of clothes inside your child's backpack in case of emergencies.
If you would like to donate items to the classroom, we will always appreciate it. Please ask your child's teacher for needed donations. Examples of items: Clorox Wipes, facial tissues, band aides, black dry erase markers, etc.
Vacations / Educational Leave
If your child will be missing more than 3 days of school, please stop by the office to fill out a form prior to the vacation dates. Each student is allowed 10 Education/Vacation Release days each year.
Visitors / Volunteers
Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested in volunteering. Be sure to get the fingerprinting form from the front office. All volunteers must be fingerprinted and complete the code of conduct training and signature form found on our Welby website. Please note, the fingerprinting process may take up to three weeks to complete, so plan accordingly.
Weather
Students will be outside when the temperature is 21 degrees or above. This temperature takes into account the wind chill factor. Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately.
Air pollution: On “Red” air quality days, all students will remain indoors. On “Orange” days, students with lung sensitivities can remain indoors with a note from a parent.
