Welcome to the Welby Elementary family! We're thrilled you're part of our caring community where teachers, students, families, and staff come together every day to create something special—a place where every child feels safe, valued, and excited to learn.

At Welby, we believe magic happens when we work as a team. ANIMALS 🐕‍🦺

Aside from trained service dogs, pets are not permitted on school property. Many students are afraid of pets and/or have allergic reactions to them, therefore we ask that you keep them off of school property for the comfort and safety all. When people bring pets on the property and do not clean up after them, this causes safety and sanitation concerns for our students as well.  Pets are certainly welcome to help walk your students to/from school, but we ask they they wait off-property. This includes all areas North of the sidewalk along 9580 South and within the perimeter of the fencing along the property.  These requirements are in-force at all times on Welby Elementary School grounds, regardless of student attendance (i.e. Nights, Weekends, School Breaks, Etc.)

ATTENDANCE ⏰

School Attendance Policy

Our attendance requirements follow Jordan School District Policy AA432.  Punctuality and regular attendance are two important factors affecting school success.  Research has shown that an important aspect of students’ access to education is the amount of time spent in the classroom.  When students are absent from school, miss part of class, or arrive late, they miss opportunities to learn.

If your student is ill and you are keeping him/her home, please call the office to ensure that your student is excused.  Also, please let your child's teacher know about the absence.  We miss our students when they are not here!

We love having your children at school and want to keep them safe every moment they're here! To help us do that, please remember that playground supervision begins at 8:45 each morning.  Before then, our wonderful staff is busy preparing those special learning moments for your kids, and we don't have anyone available to supervise the playground or building. We know it can be tricky with schedules, but waiting until supervision starts ensures your child is safe and cared for from the moment they arrive.  Thanks for partnering with us to keep everyone safe and ready to learn!

Utah State Law (Public Law 53-24-1) requires every child between the ages of six and eighteen to be in attendance at school every official school day.  The law further states that every parent or guardian has the responsibility of sending his or her child to school. The administration and staff at Welby Elementary are committed to the success of students.  Student success can best be achieved when students, parents, teachers, and school administration work together toward a common goal.

Student Absences
  1. Excused absences
    1. Illness (a maximum of 10 days may be excused due to a student illness prior to requiring a doctor’s note.)
    2. Doctor or dental appointments, which cannot be scheduled outside of school hours
    3. Funeral with parent permission
    4. Vacation absences and special types of obligation that have prior approval in accordance with Jordan District Policy with the prior completion of the Vacation/Education Leave Form.
    5. Home and hospital instruction
    6. Required court appearance
  2. Unexcused absences
    1. These are absences that are not authorized by state law nor by district or school policy but which occur with parental knowledge or consent.
      1. Examples of unexcused absences may be, but are not limited to: “needed at home,” “homework completion,” “car problems,” “babysitting,” and “skiing.”  Additionally, students will be considered unexcused from school if a parent does not call in their absence and/or does not send a note to the office within one week of the absence.
      2. Life happens and we understand that.  Please reach out to your child's teacher and the school office to let us know of any absences that come up.
  3. Truancy absence
    1. Absences that occur without school and/or parental approval.  A student is considered truant if he/she:
      1. Leaves for school but does not arrive at school
      2. Arrives at school but does not attend class
      3. Leaves school without following proper check-out procedure
      4. Obtains permission to go to a certain place but does not arrive there.

  • Choose kindness first in the classroom and out on the playground;

  • Include others in games and activities, ensuring no one feels left out;

  • Offer a helping hand and use their words to lift up their peers.

Behavior Support

At Welby Elementary, our ultimate goal is to help students develop the self-discipline they need to thrive both academically and socially. We firmly believe that every child deserves a safe, positive, and encouraging environment to grow. Because of this, we actively identify, teach, and reinforce positive behaviors school-wide until they simply become "how we do things" as Wildcats. Every teacher and staff member participates in this supportive, non-confrontational approach to keeping our classrooms focused and welcoming.

While our first step is always to teach and redirect, behaviors that fall outside of our school expectations will face clear, appropriate consequences that match the severity of the offense. By balancing consistent accountability with genuine support, we ensure that our school remains a safe, successful place for every student to learn.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthdays are a special milestone, and we love celebrating our Wildcats! If your student wishes to bring a birthday treat to share with their class, please drop it off at the main office rather than bringing it directly to the classroom. All food must be commercially prepared, packaged, and within approved dates.  To protect valuable learning time and avoid disruptions, these treats will be distributed at the teacher's discretion. Additionally, please save large items like balloons, cakes, gifts, and outside performers for your celebrations at home. Our goal is to keep the focus on learning and ensure every child’s special day is celebrated in a way that is manageable for our classrooms. Thank you for helping us keep our school day focused and safe!

Building Expectations

To keep our hallways safe and calm, students should always walk when entering, leaving, or moving through the building. When it's time to come inside or head home, classes will line up and use their assigned grade-level doors. Walking quietly in lines helps everyone get to where they need to go safely and keeps our learning time free from distractions.

Cafeteria Expectations

Our cafeteria is designed to be a place where students can come and enjoy a meal with their classmates.  Students need to follow these simple rules so all students will be able to enjoy their lunches.

  1. Show respect for the adults and other students at all times;
  2. Enjoy quiet conversations without yelling and loud talking;
  3. Students will keep the cafeteria clean by picking up all garbage around their tables and on the floor. They will never throw food or touch/share another student's lunch;
  4. Students will never run in the cafeteria and will not switch places once they are seated;
  5. Food, milk cartons, straws, or other items will not go out of the cafeteria;
  6. Each grade will need to remain seated for at least 15 minutes before they may be excused.  If students choose to stay longer to finish their lunch, they may do so up to an additional ten minutes, but please be aware that is their recess time that is being used.

Food, Drinks, and Gum

All food is restricted to the cafeteria unless authorized by a teacher for a class activity. Gum is not allowed in school. District policy prohibits the distribution of any homemade foods. All food must be commercially prepared, packaged, and within approved dates.  Please make sure to check with your child's teacher(s) regarding food allergies prior to providing any food items for classes.

Playground, Blacktop, and Fields

Some rules that will help keep our students safe and contribute to the overall safety and enjoyment of the entire student body:

  1. Only play in assigned areas.
    1. Playing will not be allowed in the following areas:
      1. Front sidewalks;
      2. Any of the parking lots;
      3. In, on, or around outbuildings and storage containers;
      4. In, on, or around the retaining wall on the West side of the property;
      5. Areas between the portables and any school areas that cannot be seen by Welby faculty and staff.
  2. Allow all students to participate in organized games (i.e. soccer, basketball, softball, etc.).  Games should not be "locked" so that all can join in.
  3. Contact games, which include tackling, tripping, or pushing, will not be permitted at school
  4. Snowball and rock throwing, sliding on the snow, ice, or on our lawns, are not permitted.
  5. We expect that respect will be given to everyone.  Students should always treat supervising adults with respect and follow their directions at all times.
  6. Fighting and/or physical attacks, along with intimidation of all kinds will not be tolerated on our campus.
  7. Playground materials and equipment are to be used safely.
  8. Baseball bats of any kind, including but not limited to metal, wood, composite, plastic, or foam bats, or hard baseballs/softballs are not to be used at recess.
  9. Students must remain on school property at all times.

Restroom Conduct

Our school restrooms are shared spaces that require everyone’s cooperation to keep clean, private, and safe. To maintain a healthy environment, we ask students to follow these simple guidelines:

  • Prioritize Cleanliness and Health: Always flush the toilet after use, throw all paper towels in the trash can, and wash your hands with soap before leaving. Sinks should be turned completely off when finished.

  • Respect School Property: Restroom fixtures, stall walls, and supplies—including feminine hygiene products—are there for health and privacy. They should never be played with, climbed on, or defaced. Only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilets to prevent plumbing issues.

  • Keep it Private and Efficient: Restrooms are not places to hang out, meet friends, play games, or use electronic devices. Students should enter, take care of their needs quietly, respect the privacy of others by keeping stalls clear, and return promptly to their learning environment.

Safe Schools Policy

The following conduct is considered dangerous or disruptive and is prohibited on school property at any time: (as per Jordan School District policy AS67 NEG)

  1. Possessing or bringing any potentially harmful item (including but not limited to guns, knives, weapons, poisonous items, or flammable materials).
  2. Possessing or bringing any item that cannot be legally possessed by a juvenile (including but not limited to alcohol, tobacco, drugs, or unauthorized medication).
  3. Possessing or bringing any facsimile of the items mentioned in #1 -2 (including but not limited to toy guns, pocket knives, drug paraphernalia, or items represented as drugs).
  4. Attempting, threatening, conspiring, or committing any act that could result in harm to others or to the school (including but not limited to stealing, vandalism, assault, arson, sexual harassment, or gang-related activities).

Students who violate the Safe School Policy will face disciplinary action in the form of restitution, suspension, or removal from school.

School Property and Materials

At Welby Elementary, we are fortunate to provide our Wildcats with the high-quality tools they need to succeed academically. Textbooks, library books, Chromebooks, learning planners, and other essential classroom materials are all furnished to students free of charge.

Because these items are shared resources and represent significant investments in your student’s education, we look to our families to partner with us in teaching property care and responsibility.

  • Daily Care & Responsibility: Students are expected to handle all school property with care. This includes keeping track of library books, keeping food and drinks away from materials, and ensuring items are stored safely when not in use.

  • Chromebook & Device Guidelines: Devices should be handled gently, carried with two hands, and plugged in to charge as directed by the teacher. Personalizing devices with stickers or drawing on school-issued tech or cases is not permitted.

  • Lost or Damaged Items: We understand that accidents occasionally happen; however, families are financially responsible for school materials that are lost, stolen, or damaged beyond normal wear and tear. If an item or device is lost or rendered unusable, a replacement or repair fee will be assessed in accordance with Jordan School District policy.

Special Programs

At Welby Elementary, we are excited to bring special programs to our school for our students' enjoyment, and these assemblies are the perfect opportunity to show what it means to be a Wildcat. Our students protect our learning and presentation time by entering and exiting the auditorium quickly and quietly under their teacher's direction. To remain safe and respectful, everyone is expected to stay seated, listen attentively, and show appreciation for our performers with polite applause rather than booing or whistling. We appreciate your partnership in reinforcing these kind and responsible audience habits at home so that these events remain positive and memorable for our entire school community.

CELL PHONES & ELECTRONIC DEVICES 📱

We follow Jordan School District Policy AA453.

Student use of personal electronic and communication devices, including cellphones, laptops, tablet computers, smart watches, listening devices, wearable technology, and other similar personal electronic devices is not permitted during the school day. In extraordinary circumstances, exceptions may be approved by the school principal in consultation with their Administrator of Schools. Devices must be silenced and remain out of sight during the school day.

Consequences for Electronic Device Policy Violation

1st Offense: Verbal reminder/warning and notification to parent/guardian
2nd Offense: Device held in the office for pick-up at the end of the day by student and notification to parent/guardian.
3rd+ Offense: Device held in the office for pick-up at the end of the day by parent or guardian.
Schools may implement additional consequences.

CHECK-IN/OUT 🪪

The  safety of our Wildcats is our absolute top priority at Welby Elementary. To maintain a secure campus, students are not permitted to leave school grounds once they arrive unless they are checked out directly through the front office by a parent, guardian, or an authorized designee listed in Skyward. When picking up your student during the school day, please come into the main office, present a valid photo identification to our staff, and sign them out. We appreciate your partnership in following these vital safety steps, which ensure we know where every child is at all times while keeping our school a secure and welcoming environment for everyone.

DRESS CODE 👕

Our school follows the Jordan School District Dress Code Policy.

School administrators will have final judgement on all matters concerning interpretation of student conduct, dress, and appearance.

MEDICATIONS 💊

Utah law states that medication may only be administered to a student by school personnel if the student’s legal guardian has provided a current written and signed request by a physician stating that medication must be administered to the student during regular school hours and that the statement describes the exact method, amount, and time schedule for administration. This means that students are not to bring any type of medication to school.   This medication should be brought to the office by the parent.  Please see our office staff for the required forms that must be on file.

Reminder—Students may not have medication in their possession and they may not share any kind of medication with friends, including over-the-counter medications such as cough drops or aspirin.

PARKING LOT 🚗

Keeping our Wildcats safe during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal requires a coordinated team effort. To ensure a smooth, secure, and predictable traffic flow, please familiarize yourself with our designated zones and traffic rules outlined below:

  • Student Drop-Off and Pick-Up Lanes (East Loop): The large horseshoe loop on the east side of the main entrance is our designated area for quick drop-offs and pick-ups. When using these lanes, please use the North lane (closest to the curb) for entering and exiting vehicles, and load or unload students from the passenger side only. The South lane is strictly for through traffic to keep the loop moving.

  • The "No Drop-Off" Parking Lots: For safety reasons, there is absolutely no student drop-off or pick-up permitted while idling in the drive lanes of our parking lots. If you pull into the West or East parking lots, you must park in a designated parking stall, turn off your engine, and physically walk your student across the designated crosswalks.

  • Bus-Only Lanes (West Loop): The loop on the far west side of the main entrance is strictly reserved for school buses. No personal vehicles are allowed in this loop at any time, and student drop-off or pick-up is completely prohibited here.

  • Faculty & Staff Parking: The separate lot on the far left (West) is strictly reserved for Welby faculty and staff. Please do not park, pick up, or drop off students in this area.

  • Crosswalk Safety: Always use the marked crosswalks when walking through the lots or crossing the main driveways. Please follow the direction of our stop signs and traffic markings to protect families and staff on foot.

  • Accessible Parking: If you utilize a designated handicap parking stall, please ensure a visible disability placard or license plate is displayed.

Thank you for your patience, kindness, and vigilance in our loading zones. Taking those extra few seconds to follow the plan guarantees that every student arrives safe and ready to learn!

WHEELS 🚲

To keep our sidewalks and common areas safe for all of our Wildcats, students are not permitted to ride bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, wheeled shoes, or scooters on school property. We ask everyone to use the simple rule "Walk your Wheels" from the moment they step onto campus until they leave at the end of the day.  Additionally, e-bikes, motorized scooters, motorcycles, and other motorized vehicles are restricted from all sidewalk and play areas, and may only be operated by licensed individuals in designated parking or drop-off lanes in accordance with traffic laws.
