About Us

  • Welby Elementary serves close to 900 students from kindergarten to sixth grade in the suburban community of South Jordan. Built-in 1979, the school has traditionally enjoyed strong support from both its parents and surrounding neighbors.
  • The curriculum stresses skills in the academic areas with special emphasis given to higher-level thinking skills, problem-solving, technology, and the arts.
  • We are pleased to have a full-time music teacher sponsored by the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Foundation. The Beverley Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program (BTSALP) provides arts-integrated instruction to elementary students, effectively increasing student performance in music.
  • Welby is a team teaching school. The teachers assigned to each grade work together as a team to implement the curriculum. The students are released early on Friday to facilitate this teaming. Students typically have opportunities to study with more than one teacher during a week.
  • Through our website, all members of our staff can be contacted, and information accessed, such as the monthly lunch menu, PTA newsletter, and monthly calendar.
  • Welby offers both a beginning and intermediate band and a beginning and intermediate orchestra program before and after school. Approximately 100 students participate. In addition, choir is offered as an extracurricular activity available to all students.
  • Welby is proud of its character education programs. We have used the nationally acclaimed “radKids” for two years. This program is committed to providing education that enhances the ability of children and parents to utilize knowledge, skills, and power to protect themselves from violence and harm. In addition, we teach the Bully Blocker and Prevention Dimensions programs to our students throughout the school.
  • The sixth-grade students serve on our Safety Patrol to help provide safe passage each day for all students. In addition, we have many leadership teams designed to foster a learning atmosphere in which leadership skills are developed.
  • Our elected School Community Council meets at least four times a year to discuss issues of concern. It conducts fundraisers and provides support for projects such as school emergency preparedness supplies, a school sign, and technology.
  • Our PTA provides great support for teachers and students. The PTA sponsors a yearly Reflections contest, holiday treats, Red Ribbon Week activities, radKids, Fun Run, and Science Night, as well as book fairs, parenting classes, field trips, and many other student services. PTA volunteers donate many hundreds of hours of service in classrooms at Welby throughout the year.
  • A hot lunch is served each day. Our food services personnel go beyond the mark to provide appetizing and nutritious choices on each menu. A hot breakfast is also served every morning.
  • School visitors are always welcome at Welby. Please check in at the office for directions and information. The principal is available to meet with patrons at any given time. Identification is always required to check a student out of school.
  • Our students are given special opportunities to excel and receive recognition through our Leader of the Week Award, Honor Roll, Visit to the Principal, Welby school choir, band, and orchestra, programs for gifted education, Welby clubs, science fairs, etc.
  • Welby Elementary has teamed with the State Department of Cardiovascular Health, the State Board of Education, and the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to become a Gold Medal School. We are very proud of becoming one of the first schools to receive all three medals: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, and now, Gold Plus.
